Reading comprehension is an essential skill for every college student. While at college, it is vital to be able to understand long passages and extract relevant information from them, regardless of the subject area. Although it can seem to be a daunting task to read and comprehend pages and pages of academic text, Disability Services offers academic coaching to registered students to assist students in this area. Below are a few tips compiled by one of the coaches in Disability Services, Saket Sharan, that will be beneficial to students starting to develop their reading comprehension skills.

  • Do not assume. This is one of the major mistakes made by students as they read text. They often assume the information and develop an opinion around it. Students are not expected to assume anything other than what is given in the text. Instead, reading the text builds greater understanding of concepts and helps develop ideas about them.
  • Capture the central idea. While reading the passage, always try to find the central idea of the passage. Ask questions such as “What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?” Capturing the main idea or the central idea of the passage will foster better and deeper understanding of the text.
  • Connect the dots. The reading of any kind of text requires connecting the dots between one paragraph and the next. Every paragraph is important, and a change of paragraphs often depicts a change of ideas and arguments and determines the overall flow of the text.
  • Use a note pad. This is specifically useful in long passages. Students are not expected to remember everything stated in the text. Making short notes gives students a clearer picture and understanding of the reading material.
  • Practice. It’s no secret that people who read a lot often excel in reading comprehension. The key is to develop a reading habit that will help develop better reading comprehension skills.
