Federal Disability Laws

Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Title 42, Chapter 126, Subchapter II of the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to public services such as Georgia State University. Additionally, since the university receives federal dollars, the regulations of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 also apply. Under these two laws, Georgia State University provides equal access to all goods and services it offers to all qualified persons with a disability. The faculty and staff of the university insure that the programs offered, including extracurricular activities, are accessible to students with disabilities. The Margaret A. Staton Office of Disability Services ensures access to students by collaborating with Georgia State community. Three general areas of focus include:

  • architectural access
  • aids and services necessary for effective communication
  • modifying policies, practices and procedures
